One day the Motor Sergeant complained that he didn't have enough
water to keep the company vehicles clean. There was a small stream
that ran between the L Co. compound and the D Trp 2-17th Cav compound,
but the capacity of the pumps used to clean the vehicles far outstripped
the capacity of the
stream.
The XO, 1st Lt. Bob Suchke stated he had a solution. He
ordered two 17 lb TNT shaped charges and two 40 lb ammonium nitrate
cratering charges. He set the first shaped charge in the center of
the stream near the motor pool and detonated it. This provided a
narrow but deep vertical hole in the ground. He dropped a cratering
charge in the hole to "make a pool" and after detonation, we
had a small 12 ft diameter "reservoir". The XO said that
wasn't enough ( he had explosive left ) so he repeated the
process. The new reservoir was nearly 25 feet across and about 10
feet deep. The motor sergeant never complained again
